Opioids and substance use is the focus of this year's conference. Attendees will hear from experts about the facts of opioid use, what can be done to reverse the crisis, safe prescribing, substance use disorders, and more.

Opioid prescribing continues downward while overdose and death related to illicitly manufactured fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine increase -- further amplified by underlying social needs. Reversing the use and impact of illicit drugs requires physician leadership, an emphasis on overdose prevention/treatment, and coordinating efforts and best practices.

The SDSMA has a goal of helping physicians take action on evidence-based interventions to implement positive actions. The SDSMA is focusing on meaningful policy implementation to support affordable, accessible evidence-based care for patients who need access to mental health care or with substance use disorders, pain, or who need access to harm reduction services. Advancing evidence-based recommendations helps reduce drug-related overdose and death and therefore, physicians coming together and learning from each other and from experts in this field will improve access to care and combat the overdose epidemic.
