SDSMA President: Kara L. Dahl, MD
Kara L. Dahl, MD, became the 140th president of the SDSMA on June 4, 2021. She has been an active member of the SDSMA since 2014.
Dr. Dahl is an emergency medicine physician at Sanford Aberdeen Medical Center and has been involved in the leadership of organized medicine for many years. Prior to becoming SDSMA president, she held offices on the SDSMA’s Board of Directors and has served on several SDSMA committees including the Committee on Tobacco, Committee on Good Samaritan Laws, and Committee on Access to Contraception. While serving on the SDSMA Policy Council, Dr. Dahl represented the District 1 Medical Society. In 2019, Dr. Dahl became a graduate of the first cohort of the SDSMA Health Leadership Institute’s Foundational Leadership Course.
During the state legislature, Dr. Dahl has volunteered for the SDSMA’s advocacy efforts by participating in the Doctor of the Day program in Pierre. In addition to her work with the SDSMA, Dr. Dahl is a past president of the South Dakota Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians and is a member of the American Medical Association.
Dr. Dahl received her medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine, Portsmouth, Dominica, and completed her residency at the University of South Florida – Tampa.
