SDSMA membership must be renewed annually and is available online between September and December in preparation for the new calendar year.
Procedures for Renewing
Members should follow these steps to complete the process:
1. If you're not logged in already, select Member Login in the upper right-hand corner of the SDSMA website.
a. Your username is the email address used for SDSMA communication;
b. If you do not remember your password, select ‘Forgot my password’ and you will be emailed a link where you can select a new password. SDSMA members already have an account whether or not it’s been used. Do not create a new account or you will not be able to complete the online renewal process or update your profile.
2. Once logged in, click Pay My Dues at the top of the page.
3. Review your state and district dues; select Add to Cart.
a. If you think your organization is paying your dues on your behalf, contact your administrator or clinic manager to verify. Please do not assume that is the case.
4. Please consider supporting the SDSMA beyond your dues through a donation to the SDSMA Foundation, a contribution to SDSMA PAC, and sponsoring the membership of medical students in our state.

American Medical Association Membership
The SDSMA also encourages you to be a member of the American Medical Association (AMA) to support South Dakota’s presence on the national stage as well as expand your professional base. SDSMA receives a commission from the AMA if members join or renew through the state instead of the AMA directly. Support SDSMA by joining the AMA or renewing your AMA membership directly through the SDSMA.
Tax Deductible Giving
Dues used for lobbying activities are not deductible. As a result, 11 percent of SDSMA dues for 2017 cannot be deducted as a business expense for federal income tax purposes. In addition, no portion of any political action committee (PAC) contribution can be deducted as a business expense on your federal income tax return. Neither dues nor PAC contributions may be deducted as a charitable contribution. SDSMA Foundation contributions are generally 100 percent deductible as a charitable contribution.
The foregoing information concerning the percentage of dues which are or may be deductible is provided for informational purposes only. The dues which may or may not be deductible by a member depends on the member’s individual circumstances, including whether the member’s employer provides an allowance for the payment of dues.
AMA dues are not deductible as a charitable contribution for federal income tax purposes, but may be partially deducted as a business expense. AMA estimates that 55 percent of your membership dues are allocable to lobbying activities of the AMA, and therefore are not deductible for income tax purposes.
Dues-paying members are eligible to receive a print copy of JAMA. For the 2017 membership year, the allocated cost of $31 for JAMA is included in, and not deductible, from AMA membership dues. All members receive free online access to The JAMA Network, which brings together JAMA and the 11 specialty journals. In addition, all members are eligible to receive AMA Morning Rounds.
The SDSMA provides members with valuable benefits, including educational opportunities, advocacy on key issues, the monthly South Dakota Medicine, regular E-News publications, and the SDSMA website to keep you current on Association offerings and industry happenings.
