Benjamin C. Aaker, MD

Benjamin C. Aaker, MD, became the 139th president of the SDSMA on May 29, 2020. He has been an active member of the SDSMA since 2011.

Dr. Aaker is an emergency medicine physician at Avera Medical Group Emergency Medicine in Yankton and has been involved in the leadership of organized medicine for many years. Prior to becoming SDSMA president, he held offices on the SDSMA’s Board of Directors and chaired three SDSMA committees: the Committee on Maintenance of Certification, the Committee on Good Samaritan Laws, and the Committee on Medical Practice. He also was a member of the SDSMA Committee on Pain Management where he worked to develop pain management guidelines for South Dakota prescribers. While serving on the SDSMA Policy Council, Dr. Aaker represented the emergency physicians specialty.

During several sessions of the state legislature, Dr. Aaker has volunteered for the SDSMA’s advocacy efforts by participating in the Doctor of the Day program. In addition to his work with the SDSMA, Dr. Aaker is a past president of the South Dakota Association of Emergency Physicians and is a member of the American Medical Association.

Dr. Aaker received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska in 2005 and completed his residency at the University of Texas Southwestern in 2008.
