Robert J. Summerer, DO
Robert J. Summerer, DO, became the 138th president of the SDSMA on May 31, 2019. He has been an active member of the SDSMA since 1999.
Dr. Summerer is a surgeon at Madison Regional Health System and has been involved in the leadership of organized medicine for many years. Prior to becoming SDSMA president, he held offices on the SDSMA’s Board of Directors and served on the SDSMA Policy Council representing his local District 3 Medical Society. He has also been a member of the SDSMA Communications Committee and the SDSMA Ad Hoc Committee on Telemedicine. During the state legislative session, Dr. Summerer has volunteered for the SDSMA’s advocacy efforts by participating in the Doctor of the Day program.
Dr. Summerer received his degree in osteopathic medicine at Des Moines University. He worked as a general medical officer at the Wagner, South Dakota, Indian Health Service for three years and then completed his residency at Des Moines General Hospital. After his residency, he finished a military commitment with the U.S. Air Force before moving to Madison, South Dakota.
Dr. Summerer has a special interest in rural medicine. He believes in the importance of people living in rural areas having access to quality health care at a fair cost, without having to experience the disruption of needing to travel for that care.
