She has been responsible for the Youth Issues Conference and any program-related activities that they have done. She is requesting we find someone who will volunteer to do this area with Nancy Larsen - who is the overall volunteer advisor for CR. Carol will have all the Youth Issues Conference materials in good order - with explanations and directions for each committee area for the members to use. Contact Lori Olson at 334-8203 or lolson@marchofdimes.com if you know of someone interested!

Registered respiratory therapist (RRT) and Asthma Educator-Certified (AE-C), Darcy Ellefson, was our guest speaker. Topic: "The 5 A's and R's of Quitting Tobacco". The committee aims to have the full training provided to surrounding health care providers in the near future. If your clinic, facility, and/or institution has not received this training, please contact Darcy directly to set up a prestentation. If you were not present and need her information, contact Mary Lerssen at 367-7933 or lerssenm@sf.k12.sd.us.
- PREMATURITY SUMMIT – SAVE THE DATE - October 14, 2005!!!
Both of these events are to be videoconferenced so that they are accessible throughout the state! Please contact your institution’s videoconferencing coordinator or nearby site to save a room, date and times!!

Nursing Grand Rounds 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon MT, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. CT.
Our national MOD speaker, Karla Damus, will be presenting on Prematurity both Grand Rounds at Rapid City Regional Hospital. We are planning to have them videoconferenced so that it can be linked into several SD communities.
- Karla will bring them up to date on the latest research, clinical and epidemiological issues around preterm birth as related to the National Prematurity Campaign. She specifically will address: Preventing Preterm Birth Prevention: Time for a 'HUGE' Change Objectives:
- Review the definitions and trends associated with increasing PTB rates in the US and South Dakota
- List traditional and changing risk factors
- Present evidence-based interventions to modify risk such as smoking cessation
- Describe recent March of Dimes supported research findings and the new paradigm of PTB as a "common complex disorder"
- Discuss some evidence based interventions that can make a difference
- Review the goals and aims of the National Prematurity Campaign
- REQUEST FROM SENATOR JOHNSON
Sen. Tim Johnson's staff person contacted Jo Merrill (of OGA) because there was an article in the SD paper about the Johnsons cooking in the Gourmet Gala in DC which raises money for the Mama and Baby Bus to provide prenatal and dental care in DC. Sen. Johnson is looking for something similar they can do for SD.
When discussed at the meeting, the committee’s agreed upon idea was to invite Sen. Johnson to the Annual Signature Chef’s Auction in November. Mary and Lori will meet with Kelly Hoefert, our state director, to learn more about this option.
- PREMATURITY AWARENESS EVENT/SIGNATURE CHEF’S AUCTION
Stemming from our success last year, we will once again highlight Prematurity Awareness day/week via the Annual Signature Chef’s Auction. Chef’s Auction will be held on Thursday, November 10th, 2005 @ CJ Calaway’s.
CURRENT IDEAS:
- Invite Senator Johnson and Family
- Have Staci Korsmo (2005 Ambassador mother) and family present and speak on behalf of MOD mission/prematurity. Encourage media presence and coverage!!
- At each place setting: Ring cards, Prematurity pins, and Staci’s story w/pictures at each table.
- Please offer additional mission ideas (particularly to grab media attention) and comments on what we would like to continue or change from last year’s event. Thanks!
- PUBLIC AFFAIRS
- We need more input/help with PA from the committee. Please let us know if you are interested in serving on this subcommittee!!
- Current members: Lisa Kilawee, Pat Schaeffer, Paula Hallberg
- Need to recruit one Youth Member (point for Standards for Success). Ideally this youth would be of college age (18 or older) as a registered voter. Please contact Lori Olson if you have suggestions of potential youth members or questions of what they would do.
