National Provider Identifier (NPI)
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced its plan for disseminating physicians' National Provider Identifiers (NPIs) to the public through the NPI registry. NPI is a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability (HIPAA) requirement; therefore, physicians who transmit claims and other HIPAA transactions electronically must utilize NPI.
