The main objective of all SDSMA committees is to plan and implement programs and projects of the Association. Committees recommend actions and policy to the Council. The SDSMA has five standing committees that guide and review the work of the organization.
Executive Committee
The Executive Committee is composed of the officers of the Association, the Immediate Past President, AMA Delegate, AMA Alternate Delegate, and two Councilors-at-Large to be elected by the Council. The Executive Committee transacts the business of the Association during intervals between Council meetings. It functions in an advisory capacity to the President in his or her role as public spokesperson for the Association.
Committee on Communications
This Committee on Communications directs the SDSMA’s external and internal communications and oversees the Association’s long-range public relations plan.
Committee on Ethics and Judicial Affairs
The Committee on Ethics and Judicial Affairs is made up of the five past presidents of SDSMA. It interprets the Principles of Medical Ethics of the AMA and the bylaws and policies of the SDSMA and how they apply to the practice of medicine, as well as to relations of physicians to one another or to patients.
Committee on Legislation
This Committee on Legislation develops the SDSMA’s legislative strategies and positions for the South Dakota State Legislature and for the United States Congress.
Committee on Medical Education
This Committee on Medical Education reviews and accredits sponsors of continuing medical education as well as considers future CME needs and helps facilitate those needs.
Committee on Medical Practice
This Committee on Medical Practice has jurisdiction on matters related to medical practice, public health, patient care and other issues involving the practice of medicine.
